Channel Islands National Park protects five rugged islands just off the Southern California coast: Santa Cruz, Anacapa, Santa Rosa, Santa Barbara, and San Miguel. Accessible only by boat or sea plane, the park preserves unique island ecosystems, from oak woodlands to kelp forests, and hosts endemic species such as the island fox. Visitors typically ferry from Ventura or Oxnard via Island Packers, which run daily in summer and limited trips in winter. Each island offers activities like kayaking through sea caves, snorkeling among colorful marine life, hiking scenic trails such as the Scorpion Canyon Loop and Anacapa Lighthouse trek, and guided naturalist programs. The park's mainland visitor center in Ventura provides exhibits, trip planning resources, and a short orientation film. Backcountry permits allow overnight camping on designated sites, offering star‐filled skies and quiet solitude. Wildlife viewing includes winter and spring whale‐watches, seabird colonies, and playful seals and sea lions. The islands’ remote nature requires visitors to pack water, food, and safety gear, and reservations for boats and campsites are strongly recommended due to limited capacity.
