Alcatraz Island, once home to the infamous federal penitentiary, is now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Accessible only by ferry from Pier 33, the island offers self-guided and audio tours of the prison, including cellblocks, solitary confinement, and guard quarters. Visitors also enjoy stunning views of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge. The site includes exhibits on prison history, escape attempts, and Native American occupation. Advance ticket booking is strongly recommended, especially in summer.
